The evolution of Centretown’s business district: mayor to help break ground on landmark condo, The Slater & Alt Hotel

The right building and lifestyle can make all the difference. In the case of The Slater and Alt Hotel, a 23 storey condominium residence plus a 17 storey boutique hotel, the central business district of Ottawa is about to get an influx of life – both metaphorically and literally.

As the population of Centretown grows, the city has been working to sensitively guide the community’s evolution in a vibrant direction. A key part of that evolution calls for class act, high-density residential dwellings in the business district, with the intention of changing the neighbourhood’s character in a meaningful way. When what was once a 9-to-5 part of town becomes a home to chic urbanites, local shops and restaurants follow; the downtown core gets a serious boost in vitality, and Ottawa is never the same again.

The Slater and Alt Hotel, at 199 Slater Street, is a direct response to this envisioned future.

So, when the ground is broken on Wednesday, February 19, it’ll be a significant moment in the history of the city – significant enough that Mayor of Ottawa Jim Watson will be on hand to help dig in, along with Broccolini Construction COO Anthony Broccolini and Hugo Germain Director of Development for Groupe Germain Hospitality.

Offering 23 storeys of gorgeously conceived condo residences and hotel suites, The Slater and Alt Hotel will serve as a remarkably central home base for urban professionals and travelers to Ottawa. Design-wise, the builder wanted more than a pleasant addition to the cityscape; Broccolini Construction envisaged a striking visual anchor that would do justice to the project’s social importance for the neighbourhood.

The ALT Hotel banner belongs to Groupe Germain Hospitality, a Canadian family owned company, pioneer of the Hotel-boutique concept, with its headquarters in Quebec City. Alt hotel on Slater Street will be a trendy and stylish hotel consisting of 17 floors and 148 rooms. It includes numerous meeting rooms on the cutting edge of technology as well as a fitness room exclusively for guests. The hotel is intricate part of this prestigious 23-storey real estate complex.

Enter Richard Chmiel of Chmiel Architects. Taking inspiration from mid-century modern design, Chmiel and his associates have sculpted a building that hits just the right note: by day, it’s bold and classic; by night, it’s a glittering, modernist jewel-box.

Amenities at The Slater – including a fitness centre with an outdoor hot tub, screening room, and a club lounge with a stunning private dining room – are among the most glamorously appointed in the city. Suites range from smart studios to double-height penthouses with captivating views of Gatineau and Parliament Hill.

Perhaps not surprisingly, The Slater has the distinction of being the city’s fastest selling condominium from launch to start, with over 75% of units sold as of press-time.

Construction of The Slater will be accompanied by the metamorphosis of Slater Street itself. With the impending Confederation Line light rail station just one block away, plans are in the works to eliminate the Transitway, and to transform the busy thoroughfare into a pedestrian-friendly street, with wide, thoughtfully landscaped walkways.
