A stroll along the banks of the Lachine Canal

On foot, bicycle or boat, the Lachine Canal is very popular when the beautiful season arrives.

Walking from one end to the other of the canal would take a little more than 2 hours, from the Old Port to Lachine.

However, many attractions located on its banks are within a walking distance from Alt Hotel Montreal. Here are our favourites:

Farine Five Roses
The Farine Five Roses sign is one of the most photographed emblems in Montreal. One of the best places to contemplate it is from The Decko, an observation point located in the Bassin Peel, a minute’s walk from the Alt Hotel Montreal. The red Adirondack chairs placed nearby are the perfect spot to eat lunch or soak up some sun while enjoying the view.

Silo no5
Continue to walk toward the Old Port. While strolling along the green banks of the canal, you will come across the Silo no5, an old grain silo dating back to 1903. This huge concrete structure has been a part of the Montreal skyline for more than a hundred years, although it ceased its activities in 1994. If many revitalization projects have been analyzed in the past few years, nothing has been done yet.

Spa Bota Bota
Located near the Silo no5 is the spa Bota Bota, spa-sur-l’eau, a luxurious spa in an old ferry boat. Book a massage, a facial or a manicure or simply enjoy the water circuit. The best views of Montreal and the Old Port can be enjoyed via the hot baths located on the top deck of the spa.

Marché des éclusiers
At one end of the Lachine canal is the Marché des éclusiers: a restaurant, a bar and a market all under one roof. The farmer’s market takes place on Saturdays and you can find a variety of local products such as fresh fruits and vegetables, breads and herbs. Grab a few items and enjoy a picnic on the banks.

Grand quai
The new cruise terminal of the Port of Montreal is now open to the public. Their green roof is the best place to enjoy the view on the canal as well as the Old Port locks.
