Discover this mini-bistro, a well-kept secret of Charlevoix.
Ah la vache! is probably the best kept secret in Baie-Saint-Paul. This small BYOW (bring your own wine) restaurant of only 18 seats and for which it is better to book weeks in advance is located on St-Jean-Baptiste Street among pretty craft shops and art galleries. Its mission? Take its guests to Switzerland for a delicious meal with cheese in the heart of it all.
The owners, Sofie and Nicolas, are the ones greeting guests on their arrival. They will show you to your table inside or on the nice patio in front of the restaurant.
The warm décor instantly reminds you of a Swiss chalet: lots of rustic wood, red and white checkered tablecloths and some ski artifacts hung on the wall. On the ‘’meuh-nu’’, you can choose between raclette cheese or Swiss fondue.
Can’t make up your mind? The indecisive will appreciate the trio of fondues, where you can choose three flavours of melted cheese in one pot. You can choose three flavours within the same pot. It is the ideal dish to share if you come as a couple or with friends. The cheese fondue is served with local cold cuts, bread, marinated condiments and slices of apples.
A must try is most definitely the fribourgeoise fondue, made with Vacherin and Gruyère. Try it alone or in a trio with traditional fondue, blue cheese or pepper, among other flavors.
The meal ends with a dessert and, if Nicolas has time, a small glass of grappa mixed with a hint of limoncello, which he will happily share with you at your table. This is how you end an already perfect meal!
