Danielle Pingert is well known in the cocktail scene in Saskatoon. After having created cool drinks at various establishments in the city and winning a few bartending competitions, this cocktail master is now behind the brand new restaurant-bar-lounge located in the Alt Hotel Saskatoon, Bokeh on the Plaza.
“We changed everything! The atmosphere is cozier and much warmer,” says the bar manager of Bokeh, which reopened on December 3 after a few weeks of major renovations.
It's not just the restaurant that has had a makeover, the cocktail card too! The new drink menu has been completely revisited by Danielle too. “From now on, we will offer four classic spritzers, 10 house cocktails and six seasonal creations,” says the bar manager who created them all herself.
Having a cocktail à la Danielle is also drinking a story. Indeed, the mixologist likes her creations to be based on real facts. She explains, “I like my cocktails to tell a story. For example, I have a cocktail on my menu called The ruse, it's a fun twist on the classic Manhattan (whiskey, vermouth, Angostura bitter, orange bitter, brandied cherry). I was inspired by the true story of women who brewed beer at a time when they weren't allowed to. When police arrived onsite, they would say that they were making bread, hence the yeasty smell. What a ruse!”
Doing all of this historical research takes a lot of Danielle’s time, but she loves it. She also likes meeting other bartenders in the region and hear their own stories… so as to turn them all into delicious cocktails!
This is what first interested her in the cocktail world: being able to concoct a beverage based on a customer's request, a true story or just what she was fancying at the moment. Behind her bar, Danielle can unleash her creativity, benefiting the thirst of her guests.
Saskatoon, a city that loves its beer
Saskatchewan produces a lot of grain, which is why there are microbreweries on every street corner in Saskatoon. Locals like to have a beer with friends after work and the bars are often crowded, even in the middle of the week.
Danielle intends to show locals and tourists that Saskatoon is much more than a good pint, it's also a great cocktail city, too!
The bar chef at Bokeh on the Plaza likes to use local spirits in her creations, such as artisanal gins and fruit liqueurs from the popular Black Fox Distillery or Lucky Bastards Distillers.
Her winter menu will feature cocktails that warm the heart... and the frostbitten fingertips! Saskatchewan winters being what they are, alcoholic coffee, fine brandy or bourbon are always a nice option to have!
