The holiday Season in Newfoundland

Newfoundlanders know how to have a good time. They like to go out to eat at restaurants, attend music concerts in bars, are warm and welcoming. They love to have friends over, cook for them, spend the evening singing and telling stories. Knowing this, it’s easily understandable why the holidays are immensely celebrated in the province.

Officially kick off the holiday season with a visit to the Merry and Bright festival at MUN Botanical Gardens, located just minutes from St. John's. From November 15, go admire the grandiose light installations while sipping on a good hot chocolate. It’s a sure way to set up the mood for the holidays.

In St. John's, a few small Christmas markets are held so you can buy local products to put under the tree. Head over to the Etsy Marketplace, which will take place this year on November 21. This market is very popular and attracts a lot of people. You can find crafts, jewelry, decoration, delicacies and much more.

There is also the Merry Makers Market in Quidi Vidi, which takes place every Saturday and Sunday before Christmas, starting November 6. Each week brings new artisans. It's a great excuse to visit the market once, twice, three times…! It’s absolutely impossible not to find a little something for everyone to treat on your Christmas list.

Then, from December 10, and until January 6, 2022, the traditional Port de Grave Christmas Boat Lighting returns. For the occasion, the fifty or so boats docked at Port de Grave will be illuminated with thousands of Christmas lights and decorations. The place becomes totally magical! A scene like you can't see anywhere else. There is also usually a large Christmas tree made of lobster cages. The perfect picture of a maritime Christmas!

On December 23, Newfoundlanders leave their homes hop on short visits to their friends and have a drink with them. This tradition is called Tibb’s Eve and is typical of the province.

Stay at the Alt Hotel St. John's to make the most of the festivities in Newfoundland.
